About Nuts & Bolts Fabric

Nuts & Bolts Fabric has been a part of the Edgemont community since 2005, when it began as a unique blend of two passions—half quilt shop, half motorcycle repair. The name says it all: Nuts for the mechanic, Bolts for the quilter. As it turns out, a love for fabric has a way of taking over… and before long, quilting became the sole heart of the business.

Today, Nuts & Bolts Fabric is a full-service quilt shop located in the beautiful Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota. Our small town of Edgemont is home to the only hand-built covered bridge in the state, and we’re proud to be part of such a special place.

Inside the shop, you’ll find thousands of bolts of fabric, a wide selection of precuts, patterns, books, notions, kits, and handcrafted gifts. We also offer longarm quilting services, sewing machine service, and classes—everything you need to support your creativity from start to finish.

A New Chapter

On April 1, 2026, I had the honor of becoming the new owner of Nuts & Bolts Fabric.

My own journey into the world of quilting took an unexpected turn in 2024 when my mom asked me to design Bible verse quilt squares for a few gift quilts she was making. What started as a small project at my kitchen counter—with a heat press and a printer—quickly grew into something much bigger.

I realized there was a real need for beautiful, faith-based fabrics, and began creating my own. That little kitchen setup turned into a growing business, Carlson Homestead Quilting, and eventually expanded into our attic after we moved from Colorado to South Dakota. Before long, I had outgrown both the space and the ability to keep up on my own.

Nuts & Bolts Fabric holds a special place in that journey—it was the very first quilt shop I visited after moving to South Dakota. Earleene, the previous owner, welcomed me with encouragement and support at a time in my business when I really needed it.

So when she decided it was time to retire, the opportunity felt like the perfect fit.

Looking Ahead

Today, Nuts & Bolts Fabric continues as a place for quilters, makers, and creatives—while also becoming the home base for Carlson Homestead Quilting.

This space allows us to grow, create, and serve the quilting community in new ways, while preserving the legacy of a shop that has meant so much to so many.

Whether you’re stopping in to browse fabric, pick up a kit, have your machine serviced, or simply find inspiration—we’re so glad you’re here.

If you’re ever in the area, we’d love for you to visit and say hello.
